Image size reference
Best image sizes for email, websites, Discord, and job applications
There is no universal “best” image size. The useful target depends on where an image goes, how it will be viewed, and whether the platform gives you a hard upload limit.
Email attachments: start around 1MB per image
For clear everyday photos, 1MB is a comfortable starting point. It keeps attachments manageable without making a normal photo look overly compressed.
Use Compress Image for Gmail or the general email compressor.
Websites and WordPress: 200–500KB is often practical
For a normal content image, resize it to the display width first, then try 200KB to 500KB. A large hero image can need more, while thumbnails often need much less.
Try WordPress image compression or resize an image for a website.
Discord and WhatsApp: optimize for quick sharing
For screenshots and shared photos, a 500KB to 1MB target is a useful starting range. Lower it only when you need a lighter file or are sharing several images.
Job applications: follow the portal, then protect clarity
Job portals may require a small profile photo or document attachment. When the instructions allow it, 100KB is a common starting target for a headshot, with dimensions around 400 × 400 pixels.
Use the job application workflow to resize, crop, and compress in one place.
